Tip #15: Make the Most of Technology

Kindly provided by Kerri Tilby-Price from Exult (helping non-profits grow).

It’s no secret that we are moving towards a cashless society – in fact, some would argue we are already there. So, if you want to continue raising funds at events or via individual donors, you need to make the transition also.

Some things you might want to think about include:

  • Having mobile EFTPOS facilities for events or collections. Some banks will lend machines to non-profits for fundraising events, so make sure you ask your bank before approaching an independent provider.
  • Having online banking details available. There is a misguided fear that by making your bank details public you are opening yourself up to a scam. It’s simply not the case. However, having your bank details available does open your organisation up for more donations. Make sure your details are on all paper fundraising promotion, as well as on your website.
  • Having credit card facilities available on your website. You don’t necessarily need to become a credit card merchant yourself, you can link through to a third party platform like www.givealittle.co.nz

Running a text to donate campaign. This kind of campaign is a project in itself and doing it well takes a great deal of planning. However, it is a growing method of fundraising and one that is only likely to increase.

It is important to remember that technology doesn’t replace the time-tested principles of fundraising. All it does is give you another way to make the connection.
