Palmerston North City Council is now considering reducing the range of plastic containers and packaging they collect for recycling- and want your feedback. Previously all recycling that is #3,#4,#6 and #7 was sent overseas to be recycled, but no one has been accepting this recently. So, over the past 18 months, they've been continuing to collect this recycling, and storing it while they investigate alternatives.

These numbers include some clear takeaway trays, multipack yoghurt pottles, some meat trays, foam cups, protective packaging that protects things like batteries and technology, some big larger cleaning products with sturdy handles, some squeezy sauce bottles.

More information and a feedback form are now open on www.pncc.govt.nz/recyclingreview. Feedback is open until Friday 8 January 2021.

You could also:

  • Switch to an item that is a #1, #2 or #5 instead, as these can all be recycled in NZ.
  • Get in touch with the company that makes your favourite items and tell them you’d like it if their packaging was made of a product that can be recycled in NZ.
  • And of course, go shopping using your own bags and containers.
